How to Care for Bleached Hair

I first got my hair bleached blonde on the 9th November 2018. It’s been bleached twice since then (the second time with added highlights) so I’ve had a good few months of learning how to look after it.

A lot of people consider bleaching their hair at least one, whether to transition to a different color or to be blonde for a while. Either way I’d thought i’d write this post and talk about my experiences with having bleached hair as well as some tips on how to care for it, enjoy!

*DISCLAIMER: I am not a hair stylist, these tips are what worked for me, if you’re unsure please consult a professional hair stylist. Also, if you are going to bleach your hair GO TO A HAIR DRESSER! Bleaching hair is risky business if you don’t know what you’re doing, if you don’t believe me go on YouTube and type in ‘hair bleaching fails’ if that doesn’t convince you to go to the hair dresser i don’t know what will!*

For some context, I decided I wanted to bleach my hair around March 2018, at the same time I also fully committed to growing out the pixie cut i’d had since I was 13. This way I had some motivation of eventually being blonde to get me through the inevitable mullet phase that everyone who grow’s out a pixie cut goes through. There aren’t many pictures from this time for obvious reasons so here’s what my hair looked like at the start of the process, featuring one of my best friends Rebe on my 20th birthday last year.

  • Not the best quality, but it clearly shows the transformation my hair has gone through in the past year! (also Rebe is a cutie so lucky you she’s featured here)

Fast forward to 9th November 2018 and my hair was finally bleached and i LOVED it, all the months of growth and unfortunate hair styles had paid off and I was the blonde of my dreams.

  • me living my best life ->
  • The process of going blonde took a few hours, the hairdresser bleached the ends, then the roots so it would all be an even color, then added a toner to make it more of an ash blonde.

Hair Care

Now let’s get to the meat and potatoes, how to actually look after bleached blonde hair.

First things first, you’ll need some purple shampoo. Bleached hair, especially if your natural color is quite dark, will go brassy if it’s not toned out with purple shampoo and conditioner. I used ‘PRO.VOKE Touch of Silver’ purple shampoo, conditioner and deep conditioning treatment.

Excuse the slightly old bottles, these are well used!

When my hair was fully bleached and not highlighted like it is now (more on that soon) i washed my hair with the shampoo and conditioner every night, then used the deep conditioning treatment once a week (usually on self-care Sundays). Depending on your hair type you may only need to wash it every other day, it’s really down to personal preference.

The first week after bleaching, maybe use the deep conditioning treatment twice, as it will help your hair regain the moisture that the bleach stripped away.

Another super important thing is heat protection. I’d advise not using heat styling at all for the first week or two after having your hair bleached, as the hair is already dry and delicate from the process, and not heat styling gives it time to recover and regain some moisture. When you do choose to use heat styling products make sure you’re using a good quality heat protector, it will stop your hair becoming more dry and damaged.

Other than that there wasn’t anything super special i did to my hair. I was lucky to have a hair dresser who did an amazing job of bleaching my hair in a way that caused the least amount of damage (lower % bleach left on for a longer amount of time) so my hair has remained pretty healthy throughout. A huge thank you to Peacocks Hair in Heslington for doing such a great job!

Recently (3 days ago) I got my hair re-bleached to hide the roots and got some warmer blonde highlights added to soften up the look for Spring/Summer. This means that my hair care has changed slightly too. I still use the PRO.VOKE products but only every other day. On the other days I use the L’Oreal Elvive color safe shampoo and conditioner, to keep the warmer tones in.

My hair has changed a huge amount over the past year, from a dark brown pixie, to bleach blonde bob and now a warmer blonde bob! I can’t wait to grow my hair to it’s goal length (around my shoulders) and go a warm strawberry blonde for the summer.

Have you ever bleached or thought about bleaching your hair? How did you find it? Be sure to share your experiences and favorite products for blonde hair in the comments below!
