How to Maintain a Work-Life Balance Whilst at University

It’s about mid-way through April, and if you’re at university, that means it’s time to revise for exam season. It’s that lovely time of year when the weather is gorgeous but your stuck inside the library hating yourself and your degree. So. For this post I thought I’d stray away from my usual content and post some tips on how to maintain a decent work-life balance whilst studying at university. This is more to give myself a kick up the backside and start properly revising but hopefully it will help you too, student or otherwise!

Tip 1: Have a Set End Time

Everyone’s pulled an all nighter at uni for a number of reasons; essays due, exam revision, wild night out – the usual. But it’s good to have a set time of day to stop working that you stick to 80% of the time. Mine is usually around 9pm. After that unless I have other plans, the makeup is off, the work is put away and the Sims 4 turned on for some down time before bed.

Having a set time to switch off means you don’t accidentally pull a 12 hour work day, something which can lead to burnout if done too often, plus it may make you more motivated to get all your work done before that time so you can finish for the day earlier.

Tip 2: Don’t Always Study at Home

Although it’s easy to study at home, home is where the distractions live. Netflix: at home, Games: at home, BED: AT HOME. It will save you so much time in lost distractions to get out the house and study some place else. I like studying in my department at uni, it’s less crowded than the library and nobody shoots you evil glares for opening a pack of crisps! So pack your things and get out the house for a few hours.

Tip 3: Have At Least 1 Full Day Off a Week

No ifs, no buts. We all need time to recharge and taking 1 day off a week is the bare minimum of that recharge time. When at university it can be really easy fall into a thinking pattern that if you’re not working 100% of the time you’re going to fail. It’s really not the case! In fact, having some time off can help your Brain remember information you’ve previously learnt!

When I remember, mine is usually on a Sunday so I can be rested for the following week but any day that works well with your schedule is fine.

Tip 4: Make Time for Self Care

Much like the above tip, ‘you’ time is essential for a good work-life balance. Whether it’s a self care Sunday or an afternoon of guilt free Netflix, whatever makes you feel calm and relaxed make some time for it. It’s better to have regular self care breaks than work yourself to burn out, I speak from experience.

Tip 5: Make Time for Your Friends

A problem shared is a problem halved and all that, sharing your university stress with a friend who also has university stress can be a good way to show that you’re not alone in your situation. Use it as an opportunity to lift each other up! Study together, go grab a coffee or take a break from everything and go drink cocktails till 1am, just have time away from the books and with the people who matter most.

I hope some of these tips will help you manage your work-life balance at university just a little bit better. Make no mistake I currently don’t do most of these but I should, this post will hopefully remind me to.. Now if you don’t mind, I need to revise.
